Tivoli Gardens, The Danish Disneyland

With 5mn visitors in 2015, Tivoli stands out as the 2nd most popular theme park in the world, the most-visited theme park in Scandinavia, and the 4th most-visited in Europe after Disneyland Paris, Europa-Park Rust and the Efteling. Visiting Tivoli, with its open air stage shows, refreshing beer, and magical twirl of merriment, was a cock-a-hoop experience.

Uniquely, a large outdoor area with fairground rides, shows, and other entertaining activities. Notably, a collaboration of scenic Gardens, that allows entry for £13 without rides, and £42 with rides.

Tivoli & Vauxhall (French and Italian Influence)

The amusement park was initially called “Tivoli & Vauxhall”, citing the “Jardin de Tivoli” in Paris. Tivoli’s founder, Georg Carstensen, had obtained a 5 year charter by telling King Christian VIII that “When the people are amusing themselves, they do not think about politics”. Thereafter, the monarch granted Georg roughly 15 acres of the embattled slip outside Vesterport, for an annual rent.

The Garden has been into existence ever since 15th August 1843, which gives it that special touch of medieval Danish era. From it’s very foundation, Tivoli has been offering a variety of attractions. Exotic Oriental Architecture, Theatre and Band performances, Blooming lush gardens, restaurants and cafés, and mechanical primitive amusement rides.

On certain evenings, a special display of fireworks is organised at Tivoli’s lake.

Delightful Danish Dining

The sparkling pavements, the enlivened fountains, and the vivacious crowd will sweep you off your feet. Trust me, it’s hard not to fall in love with the setting.

Not when, you can ride the restored century-old roller-coasters, and thereafter indulge in a wonderful meal at ‘The Hereford Beefstouw’. There are plenty of shopping opportunities available for patrons, and fashion lovers. You can easily spend 8-10 hours in the vicinity, indulging in some of the simplest, yet most luxurious escapades.

Situated in the heart of Copenhagen

Tivoli offers something for everyone. The leisurely small boats, the magnificent parks, the exhilarating roller coaster rides, delightful food, and a very cheery ambience. Moreover, there is a choice of everything, from traditional Danish cuisine, to French bistro and even Asian food.

I have been to Disneyland in Paris, and this comes very close with all its elemental offerings. Albeit, If you are visiting between 14th May – 8th September, you will get to enjoy more than 50 events comprising of symphony concerts, opera shows, pop and rock artists, and much more.

I was visiting during August, the European summer time, when the open-air Plænen stage hosts free rock concerts by Danish bands.

Travel Tips

Most visitors get a Copenhagen pass, which allows unlimited visits over the weekend. I don’t usually drink Beer, but Tivoli had me order one.

As a matter of fact, If it wasn’t for that, I would have most likely ended up with hot chocolate or some delightful danish coffee. More so, I love Tivoli for its innumerable blooming bell shaped flowers, which are imported from the Netherlands.

I wandered around the market stalls, like a Kid in the Candy Shop. If I come back to Tivoli in future, I would add their Aquarium to my bucket list, and attend the night shows by local artists. Do visit this Fairy Tale Garden, while you are in Copenhagen.
